New Pokemon Snap

Platform: Nintendo Switch

Release Date: April 2021

Game History

So this is actually the sequel to Pokemon Snap. Yes, you read that right. They named a sequel The New Pokemon Snap.

The original Snap was played on the Nintendo 64. The play was simple. You explored different areas and Professor Oak gave you the task of taking photos of different Pokemon. As time progressed, he gave you different things such as an apple or flute to help you make the Pokemon do different activities.

The game ended with you up above the sky in your special machine and encountering the legendary Pokemon, Mew.

New Game

The New Pokemon Snap is similar to the old. Some key differences are
  • More Pokemon - the original game only had a portion of the original 150 Pokemon
  • Different map locations - now you are exploring jungles, volcanos, and even under the water!
  • New Characters - you are working for a new "boss" and with other Pokemon Photographers

You can sometimes find Dodrio sleeping nearby

You'll find Hoothoot during the day sleeping, but at night...

How To Play The Game

This game is the one of the most user-friendly games around. You go through the basic controls of how to take the photographs. You don't have to worry about Pokemon chasing you or attacking. You do need to keep an eye on those that may flee from the sight of you.

As you take more photos and progress, you open more "tracks." You start visiting the different islands at night time. Then you start going to different islands. I loved when they did an update later after buying the game. It opened a new island area to explore with more fun Pokemon to "capture."

The more you explore, the more behaviors you will see out of the different Pokemon. For example, throwing some apples around got me these two beauties below.

Critique of the Game

To be honest, the only part I didn't like of the game is that a lot of the Pokemon were the newer generations. I would have liked to have seen a lot more of the original 150 Pokemon. You do find some of the original in both games such as Pikachu, Charmander, Squirtle, and Magikarp.

Otherwise, I have a lot of fun playing this game. It's a relaxing kind of game that allows you to navigate the Pokemon world in a different way from the games of being a Trainer.
