Meal and Movie Monday

Monday's can be a drag, which I why I love Meal and Movie Monday! πŸ²πŸ˜‹πŸŽ₯🍿

For the first Meal and Movie Monday, I will be sharing two of my favorites. I'll be sharing an old family favorite made popular by my Grandma and one of my favorite comedy westerns (no, not a John Wayne flick).

Meal: Pasty

P-a-st-ee. Doesn't sound like much and frankly, it's a really simple recipe. In my opinion, that's what makes it perfect! I'll be honest. Cooking is not my forte. In fact, my husband likes to kick me out of the kitchen when it comes to meal time. Most of the reasoning behind is I can cook but I tend to leave the spices and seasonings out. This cooking behavior stems from me

So having an easy recipe like pasty makes it easy for me to be in and out of the kitchen in no time. You will need the following ingredients:

  • Pie crust
  • Lean hamburger meat
  • Onion
  • Regular Idaho Potato (1-2, depending on size)
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Steak sauce
And that's all you need. Still sounds easy, right? The process is just as easy.

First, you have to preheat the oven at 350°. Can't cook a meal in a cold oven, right? That would be quite the trick!

Next, you roll out the pie crusts on a non-stick pan. Lay out each pie shell on either side of the pan. Be sure that when you fold the crust over that makes a full half circle. It may resemble an empanada.

Then, grab the hamburger meat out of the fridge. Mix it together with some onion and a little steak or Worcestershire sauce. I always vary how much I use of the onion and sauce. It all depends on what kind of mood I'm in or who else I'm cooking for. Set the meat aside for now.

Grab the potato(es) now. Wash it off, peel it, and cut it up in slices. Note: don't cut longways. I tend to cut the potato in thin-ish slices. Take a look at the picture below to get a visual idea of how thick/thin they are.

After the potato slices are ready, it's time to build your pasty!

Divide the meat up between the two pie shells and spread it out so it covers the whole areas. Pick out the potato slices you like and lay it out over the meat. Now fold the pie crust halves over and pinch around the connection to "close" it up.

Time to slip the pan into the oven. Set a timer for 40 minutes. Check on it after 40 minutes. Stick a fork in the pasty. If it sticks through easily, then it's ready. If not, stick it back in for a few minutes and recheck.

Variations: My mom used to add green peppers and other veggies in. I tend to prefer mine as just meat and potatoes, but to each his own. Drizzle a little ketchup over it and it is good to eat.

And now for the movie portion of Meal and Movie Monday.

Thanks to my parents, I have a great appreciation for classic and western movies. One of my favorite stars is John Wayne. I love his movies with Maureen O'Hara. The chemistry they have is great and my two favorite John Wayne Movies, McClintock! and The Quiet Man, star both as husband & wife.

However...today's movie discussion is on a non-John Wayne movie. This movie has a few surprise stars in it and some new faces. The movie is called Support Your Local Sheriff. No, it's not Support Your Local Gunfighter.

The movie is a wild one from beginning to end! Let's star with the stars.

STARS

The top stars of this movie include James Garner, Jack Elam, Joan Hackett, and Harry Morgan.

Harry Morgan, I feel, is best known for his roles as Colonel Sherman Potter in the TV series M*A*S*H and Officer Bill Gannon for the TV series Dragnet. Jack Elam is found in a bunch of western films and comedies. He has a very distinct look due to a wandering left eye that he lost vision in during his youth. Joan had quite a history in film, but mostly in roles on TV shows such as Gunsmoke and The Twilight Zone.

Just like the others, James Garner has a long history of acting. He's apparently best known for his roles in The Rockford Files and Maverick. Personally, I always thought he reminded me of Mike Brady from The Brady Bunch.

PLOT

The story centers around this little town out West that "blows up" when the townspeople suddenly discover gold. Gold brings people running to this little town which quickly transforms into a much bigger town with saloons, horses, and troublemakers. James Garner's character, Jason, wanders on through on his way to Australia. Yes, you read that right. On his way to Australia. Repeats it quite a few times throughout the movie.

Jason winds up being hired as Sheriff of this town by Harry Morgan who plays the role of the Mayor. From then on, things get interesting as Jason "locks up" the son of a local family after watching him murder someone in the saloon. The family proceeds to try and free him, but luck just isn’t on their side. The story is one big laugh after another!

QUOTES FROM THE MOVIE

"If that gun had gone off, it would've blowed right up in my face."

"Pa, you been touchin' up your hair again?"
"Whadda ya mean, AGAIN?

"What would I want with a reputation? That's a good way to get yourself killed."

"Oh, I'm sorry. They didn't use words like that in the third grade, did they?"
"Well, how would I know? I didn't get that far."

"Remember what the Sheriff said: no more shootin' 'til the sun goes down."

"How? We can't recruit enough dishwashers."

"I figure the way prices are around here I may go broke around 2:30 this afternoon."

LEVEL OF HUMOR

Just as a fair warning, most of the humor is good, clean humor. There are a few moments that, I think, are more adult humor. However, I feel like the humor is more like the humor you find in Cars. The adult humor is there, but the kids don’t really know it.

Well, I hope I have piqued your curiosity about this hidden treasure of a movie. If you  are interested, be sure to check out the links below:
